The Tokyo Auto Show

Why was it funny?

First, I didn’t go to this event to take “the shot” . I just wanted to share what I saw with you. Yet, hundreds of grown guys would cram into a section/event to take pictures of “the pretty models” rather than appreciate the technology and beauty of the cars.

From my point of view, I would say that 75% of the guys who attended this auto show went there just for the babes than rather for the cars. LOL!   But I think in events like these, it’s the babes that bring in the men right? Sex always sells in the end… it’s not the cars!

And yes, it’d be different without the girls. However if I were to enjoy the beauty of hot women, I’d like to enjoy it with my own naked eyes while cherishing every moment without looking at them through a camera. Seriously… what are you going to do with all those photographs when you go home? Fap? Get a GF!

But seriously, It does feel weird having an orgy of photographers having a gang bang photo shoot of women… especially when its without a car. For example, where’s the car in this photo below? These nice women are just handing out brochures. Why the pictures?

Also how do you explain guys using full zoom at a packed event from 5 feet away from a subject? I saw some guys using big telephoto lenses at distance as close as 10 feet from the girls. Seriously WTF????

To be honest, I was so curious I actually peeked into some of their camera screens and my assumptions were right on the ball!

Do you want to know what I saw? I think you would know already…

Closeup head shots of the models’ faces, skirt lines, cleavages… and the list goes on! HAHAHA!

The only portrait shot I have was when a model walked up to me, posed and smiled… and this shot was with a wide lens. Not a telephoto. I think I should have brought my telephoto lens? LOL

But whatever rows your boat right? If it makes you happy… do it! Enjoy life! It’s short!

To me, doing harmless activities such as photographing women at an auto show is better than doing drugs or doing nothing at home! I really mean it!~

I don’t mean to offend anyone but damn was it funny!

However, if you’re going to take a shot of a girl… I’d suggest you take it like this below (or the one up above with the scooter) and not of closeup shots of cleavages…  Also make sure she’s looking at you to.These girls are professional models and they love looking into cameras!

And please remember to ask them permission when they are not on the job such as not doing any presentations.

Models are humans and they deserve respect and privacy when they want it.

As an experienced photographer, go with the flow of the show while being courteous to other photographers and people as well. Sometimes photographers mess up a really good show meant for the public by getting in the way and looking stupid just to get a closeup shot of some babes cleavage!

What Camera and Lens Did I Use

For this event, I used a 5D Mark 2 with my favorite ultra wide lens, the EF 16mm to 35mm F2.8L and no flash. To me, the lens was perfect because I wanted to take whole pictures of automobiles and having a wide lens like the 16-35 was perfect for taking these shots with the 5D Mark 2 that provided me the luxury of a full frame sensor. I didn’t even use a strobe because the ambient lighting there is generally pretty good for photography.

BTW, I hope you enjoyed the pics. There will be more coming. Stay tuned.

The Tokyo Auto Show 2011 takes place from Dec.3 to December 11 at the Tokyo Big Site. If you’re going to go, I highly recommend you go on a weekday not on a weekend. Also travel by train because the roads will be packed. The closest station is called Kokusai Tenjijo Seinon Station. It’s not that far from Tokyo station… probably like a 20-30 minute ride.

Speaking of which, over 40,000 people attended that day I went and this is the first time the Auto Show was taking place at the Big Site. In the past, the Auto Show would take place at Makuhari Messe in Chiba! Yup that big exhibition center near Chiba Costco!
